Classic Grounding Mat — Setup & Care Guide

Quick answer: Put the mat where your bare feet rest, snap the cord onto its metal stud, plug the adapter into the earth pin of any 3-pin socket, and you're set up — no electricity, no switch. Two checks prove it: a socket tester confirms your wall outlet has a live earth, and the tester pen confirms the mat's surface conducts. Together, that's a grounded mat. Wipe clean with a damp cloth only.

What's in the box?

  • Classic Grounding Mat — conductive carbon-infused vegan leather surface on a rubber base
  • Safety Grounding Cord — 4.5 m, with a built-in 100 kΩ resistor
  • Safety Adapter — for local 3-pin sockets, earth pin only
  • Conductivity Tester Pen — confirms the mat's surface conducts

How do I set up the Classic Grounding Mat?

  1. Place it. The Desk Mat goes under your feet at a desk, or beneath a forearm while you work. The Floor & Sleep Mat suits the floor, the sofa, or across the foot of the bed for feet and calves overnight. The textured conductive side faces up.
  2. Snap the cord. Press the Safety Grounding Cord onto the metal stud at the mat's corner until it clicks.
  3. Plug in. Connect the cord's other end to the Safety Adapter and push the adapter into a wall socket. Only its earth pin makes contact; the socket doesn't need to be switched on.
  4. Make skin contact. Bare feet, hands or any bare skin on the surface gives the strongest connection. If you prefer socks, choose thin natural-fibre ones — cotton or bamboo — which conduct once lightly damp from the skin's natural moisture; synthetic socks and shoes don't.

How do I check it's working?

Two checks, each proving one half. Neither proves the other half.

  1. The socket — is the earth there? Plug a socket tester (in the Tester Kit) into the wall socket and match its lights to the legend printed on it. The correct-wiring pattern means the earth pin is live. This is the only check that proves the earth; the pen can't see it. Once per socket is enough.
  2. The mat — does it conduct? Touch the tester pen to the surface. It lights: the surface conducts. This is the only check that proves the mat; the socket tester can't see it. Once at setup is enough — a mat doesn't need a testing schedule.
  3. Both together — a live earth at the wall, a conducting mat snapped and plugged into it — is a grounded mat. That's the everyday proof, and it takes a minute.

Want proof on your own body? That takes a multimeter set to AC volts: one probe to the earth (through the adapter), one held in your hand. Note the reading, then put your bare feet on the connected mat — the number falls toward zero. That drop is grounding, measured. It's what we show on our Lives, and it's the definitive test for anyone who wants it. Message us and we'll walk you through it.

How do I clean the mat?

A damp cloth, then air dry. That's all. Never the washing machine, and never soak it. Body lotion can leave a film on the surface — apply it at least an hour before using the mat, or wipe the mat after.

What if the pen doesn't light?

A dark pen means one thing: the surface isn't conducting where you touched it.

  1. The surface. Wipe the mat with a damp cloth to remove any lotion or dust film, dry it, test again. This fixes nearly every case.
  2. The stud. Touch the pen to the metal stud. If it lights there but not on the surface, the surface is coated — back to step 1.
  3. The pen. If it lights on nothing, not even the stud, message us and we'll replace it.

What if the socket tester shows a fault?

Use another socket — most homes have several with a good earth. If every socket shows a fault, send us a photo; a grounding rod to real soil is the usual answer. And if the pen lights, the socket passes, but you still doubt the connection between them, reseat the snap and the adapter; a continuity tester checks the whole chain.

Thunderstorms: when thunder is close, unplug the cord until the storm passes — about an hour after the last thunder — the way you might a laptop, then plug back in. Why, and why it's a habit rather than a worry, in our FAQ.

Frequently asked questions

Does the pen prove I'm grounded?

No. It proves the mat's surface conducts. The socket tester proves the earth is present at the wall. Together they're the practical proof; a multimeter reading of your body voltage dropping is the definitive one.

Does the grounding mat use electricity?

No. The cord connects only to the earth pin — the safety ground every appliance uses — and carries a 100 kΩ resistor. No household current flows through it, and the socket doesn't need to be on.

Which size should I choose?

The Desk Mat (68 × 25 cm) fits under a desk for both feet or beneath a forearm. The Floor & Sleep Mat (60 × 40 cm) is squarer, for the floor, the sofa, or across the foot of the bed overnight.

Does it work through socks?

Bare skin is best. Thin natural-fibre socks — cotton or bamboo — conduct once lightly damp from the skin's natural moisture; synthetic socks and shoes don't.

I don't feel anything — is it working?

Feeling nothing is normal; grounding is subtle. The two checks tell you whether the setup is right. What your body does with it is yours to judge over weeks, not minutes.
