About Grounding: The Science

Grounding (also called earthing) is the practice of connecting your body directly to the Earth's natural electrical charge. This can be done by walking barefoot outside — or by using indoor grounding products that connect to the Earth through your home's earthing system. The Earth carries a subtle negative charge; the proposed mechanism is that when you ground, free electrons transfer to your body, potentially helping neutralise free radicals and calm inflammation.

How It Works: The Proposed Mechanism

When your skin touches a conductive surface connected to the Earth, your body's charge equalises with the Earth's. Studies report four effects, and propose a mechanism for each:

  • Calmer inflammation — free electrons interacting with inflammatory compounds in the body.
  • Steadier cortisol rhythms — stress-hormone patterns aligning with natural circadian rhythms.
  • Improved circulation — increased blood-cell surface charge, reducing blood viscosity.
  • A calmer nervous system — a shift toward the parasympathetic “rest and repair” state.

Two Ways to Ground

Free, outdoors: walk barefoot on grass, sand or soil for 20–30 minutes; garden with bare hands; swim in natural water.
