Grounding Research: The Complete Library

Every published human study of indoor grounding products we could find — sheets, mattress pads, mats, patches — assembled in one place and checked against the journals: 28 studies across twenty years, plus the reviews, each with its design, sample size, product, result and who paid for it. Last reviewed 19 September 2026. Know a peer-reviewed study we have missed? Send it to us and we will add it.

How to read this page. We mark every study by who funded it. Independent means a university or hospital with no grounding-product money involved; manufacturer-funded means a mat maker other than the American company that pioneered the field; industry-funded means Earth FX / Earthing Institute funding or authorship. Studies in patient groups are shown separately and never used to describe what our products do for healthy customers.

Our products are general wellness products, not medical devices. Nothing here is a claim to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

The findings, attributed

Ten results from studies in healthy adults, written the way the papers report them.

Sleep · double-blind trial

In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, adults sleeping on an earthing mat recorded significantly more total sleep time than those on a sham mat, and lower insomnia severity at follow-up.

Kyung Hee University College of Medicine, Seoul · 2025 · 56 adults analysed · 31 days · Read the paper ↗

Recovery · triple-blind, independent

In a triple-blinded, sham-controlled trial, grounded sleeping accelerated recovery and reduced markers of muscle damage and inflammation after intensive exercise.

University of Salzburg · 2019 · 22 adults · 10 nights · no industry ties · Read the paper ↗

Muscle damage · double-blind

In a randomised, double-blind study, men who grounded after hard exercise showed a smaller rise in creatine kinase, a muscle-damage marker, than sham controls (P = 0.04 at day 2).

Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine · 2015 · 32 men · Read the paper ↗

Sleep & cortisol · pilot

In the first grounded-sleep study, night-time cortisol fell and cortisol rhythms moved toward the normal 24-hour pattern; participants reported better sleep and less pain and stress.

Nervous system · controlled

Grounding improved heart-rate variability beyond simple relaxation (P < 0.01) — a shift toward the body's rest-and-repair state.

Integrative Medicine · 2011 · 27 adults · Read the paper ↗

Blood viscosity · pilot

Two hours of grounding increased the surface charge on red blood cells and reduced clumping — the basis of the blood-viscosity finding.

Blood flow · double-blind pilot

One hour of grounding improved blood-flow regulation and signs of inflammation on thermal imaging.

Health · 2015 · 40 adults · randomised, double-blind · Read the paper ↗

Mood · double-blind pilot

One hour of grounding improved pleasant and positive mood within the grounded group; the control group also improved on one measure, so we cite this cautiously.

Fatigue & function · RCT

In a double-blind randomised trial, massage therapists who grounded at work and while sleeping reported improved physical function and reduced fatigue and anxiety.

No Cochrane systematic review of grounding exists, and no large multi-centre trial has been run. Independent critics point to small samples, imperfect blinding and commercial funding; we list those criticisms here because they are fair, and because the newer double- and triple-blinded trials are the answer to them.

Our verdict

Across two decades, studies consistently report modest, favourable effects of indoor grounding on sleep, stress, muscle recovery, blood flow and heart-rate variability — and the same direction keeps appearing in different labs, different countries and different designs. The best-designed trials now exist: a double-blind sleep trial in Seoul, a triple-blind recovery trial in Salzburg, a double-blind sleep pilot in Taiwan. The samples are still small, some of the early work was funded by the industry that pioneered it, and no large independent trial has been run. That is why we say studies report rather than proven.

What is not in doubt is whether the connection exists. Our fabric's conductivity is measured by Bureau Veritas and published. Whether you are grounded can be seen on a multimeter on your own body. And what grounding does for you is a question a month of nights answers, at the price of a pillowcase, with the risk on us. Find your starting point →

What we say, and what we don't.
  • We report what studies found, attributed to the institution and year, in the past tense.
  • We describe findings in healthy adults. Studies in patient groups appear here as background, never as benefits.
  • We never claim to treat, prevent or cure any disease, and we never say "proven".
  • If a study is small, uncontrolled or industry-funded, we say so where we cite it.
  • This library is complete to the best of our knowledge at the date shown. If we have missed a study, we add it rather than argue about it.
