Grounding Continuity Tester — How to Use It

Quick answer: The continuity tester checks the whole chain at once — product surface, snap, cord and socket earth together. Plug its lead into the earthed socket, touch its probe to your connected sheet or mat, and read the indicator: continuity confirmed means there is an unbroken path from that spot to the earth in your wall. It's the tool for finding where a break is when the pen and socket tester both pass.

How is this different from the pen and the socket tester?

Three tools, three questions. The socket tester asks: is there a live earth in this outlet? The pen asks: does this surface conduct? The continuity tester asks the question in between: is the surface actually connected to that earth, through the snap and the cord? Its lead references the socket's earth directly, so a positive reading proves the whole path. It's the check we run over WhatsApp when the first two pass and a customer still isn't sure — and it's how we find a failed snap or a broken cord.

How do I use it?

  1. Connect your product as normal — cord snapped on, adapter in a wall socket the socket tester has passed.
  2. Plug the tester's lead into the same earthed socket (or the adapter's spare port, if it has one). The tester now knows what "earth" is.
  3. Touch the probe to the product's surface and hold for a second.
  4. Read the indicator. A continuity signal means the surface is connected to the earth through your wall. No signal means a break somewhere — see below.
  5. Test several spots on a sheet — near the stud, the middle, the far corner — to confirm the whole weave is connected, not just the stud.

What if there's no continuity?

Work from the wall toward the surface; the first failure is the break.

  1. The socket. Confirm its earth with the socket tester, or try a socket in another room.
  2. The adapter. Reseat both ends.
  3. The cord. Touch the probe to the cord's metal snap directly. Continuity at the snap but not on the surface means the surface is coated. No continuity at the snap means the cord or the adapter.
  4. The snap. Unclip and re-snap the cord firmly onto the stud.
  5. The surface. Fabric: wash twice in plain detergent free of softener, bleach, fragrance and essential oils. Mat or topper: wipe with plain water. Test again.

The tester reads continuity to earth only. It's not a mains-safety instrument and doesn't test a socket's live or neutral wiring — the socket tester in the Tester Kit does that.

How do I prove I'm actually grounded?

Continuity proves the path exists. To see grounding on your own body, use a multimeter on AC volts: one probe to the earth through the adapter, the other held in your hand. Note the reading, then touch the connected product with bare skin — it falls toward zero. That drop is grounding, measured. We're glad to walk you through it on WhatsApp.
