The Rubber Sole Conspiracy: How We Stepped Off the Earth

Quick answer: There is no conspiracy. For nearly all of human history, footwear conducted — leather, woven fibre, bare skin — and the body's charge equalised with the ground at every step. In a few decades of the twentieth century, shoes switched to rubber and synthetic soles, which are electrical insulators. The contact ended, nobody studied it at the time, and grounding is simply the practice of restoring it.
Let us be clear from the first line: nobody met in a smoke-filled room and decided to disconnect humanity from the Earth. What happened is stranger, and more mundane. It was an accident of materials science, and almost nobody noticed.
When did shoes stop conducting?
For almost all of human history, the sole of a shoe was leather, plant fibre or nothing at all — all of which conduct, especially when a little damp, as feet and ground usually are. Then vulcanised rubber, patented in the nineteenth century, met mass production. Rubber-soled canvas shoes were being sold by 1917; by mid-century, rubber and then synthetic compounds had replaced leather on most of the world's feet. The new soles were cheaper, tougher, waterproof — and electrically insulating. The switch was excellent for shoe companies and puddles, and it severed a contact humans had maintained since we first stood up.
Nobody voted on it. Nobody studied it at the time. We just stepped off the Earth, and stayed off.
What else insulates us?
Rubber soles were only the beginning. Does it matter?
Honestly: the science is still working that out. A small body of peer-reviewed research reports better sleep, calmer inflammation markers and steadier cortisol rhythms when people restore ground contact. What is not in doubt is the physics: an insulated body cannot equalise with the ground, and a conductive one can. How do you step back on?
The free way: kick your shoes off on grass, sand or soil for twenty to thirty minutes whenever you can. Damp ground conducts best; a dry concrete pavement barely does.
The consistent way, for the other 95% of modern life: a grounding sheet or grounding mat that reaches the Earth through the third pin of the socket your home already has.
